Brickell Key condos are some of the most luxurious and grand condos available anywhere in the world. Brickell Key is a triangular-shaped island that is it's own small paradise. This central location is only 5 minutes from the Port of Miami, about 11 minutes from Miami International Airport and a mere 15 minute drive to Miami Beach. This developed, 44-acre expanse of land is separated by only a few feet of water from the buzz of downtown Miami. The Brickell Key condos that stand up and take their place in the Miami skyline are located near the heart of South Florida's financial district. This area was once called "Millionaires Row." Though the mansions of the past are long gone, the unique character of the area still attracts many entrepreneurs and businessmen.
Once you get on the bridge toward Brickell Key you leave behind the world of business and enter the relaxing pace of this refuge. Living in a Brickell Key condo offers a peaceful and secure lifestyle. Picture the blue sky and ocean around you and nothing in the way of your view of the Miami skyline or Biscayne Bay.
How did this island refuge, with its odd shape and charm, come to be? Before Brickell Key became a leader in lavish living and international business interests, landowners William and Mary Brickell and Julia Tuttle had to persuade Henry Morrison Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railway to Miami. Florida had been visited by two freezes in a matter of weeks, and these freezes wiped out crops and devastated many farmers. They heard about a region in the south of Florida that had escaped the freezing temperatures and were shipping crates of tomatoes to Key West. Moreover, since it had escaped the freeze, many began thinking that the Biscayne Bay area could be the home of the future citrus industry. Unfortunately, the region was only accessible by a long and hard trip by stagecoach or by boat, in waters that were sometimes dangerous. A trusted employee of Flagler's told him that he'd seen lemon trees blooming and vegetables growing unharmed in the region and brought him some orange blossoms to prove that the area was free from frost. After deciding to visit the area and see for himself, Flagler agreed to extend his railroad from West Palm Beach to Miami. He built a luxurious hotel and helped with the layout of the city. Henry Flagler's Railway reached Miami by 1896, and people began pouring into the area. Flagler had a 9-foot deep channel dug out from the mouth of the Miami River, which created two small islands. It wasn't until 1943 that Edward N. Claughton Sr., a real estate investor, bought the islands and more of the bay's land to create Brickell Key. The Claughton's continued to own the property that is now blanketed by upscale Brickell Key condos, until the 1970's. That's when a company called Swire Properties bought a large portion of the property and began working on the creation of one of the most unique island residences in the world. Swire Properties has gone on to complete many construction projects on Brickell Key. The Carbonell, a 284-unit, 40 story high Brickell Key condo tower named after the Cuban sculptor Manuel Carbonell, and Jade Residences, with its 340 units, are two of the residential properties developed by Swire Properties. They have also contributed thousands of feet of office and retail space. More
