History of Miami 1990 to Present
Miami may have begun slowly with residences until the Indians were conquered but when it started it boomed. In 1900, there were 4,955 people living in the Miami area which reached 42,753 by the 1920’s. In 1920, people flocked to Miami for the gambling and very lax prohibition laws which brought on a construction boom unlike any other time in the history of Miami. Miami began to see several high rise building where nothing was before. In 1927, a hurricane hit Miami and while trying to rebuild the Great Depression hit in 1929, this devastated the construction boom and the growth of Miami stood still. In the middle of the 1930’s Miami began to grow again and the population reached an all time high of 142,955. This growth has so much to do with the development of the Miami Beach area and the Art Deco district of Miami. Not, only could you enjoy visiting Miami but now you had a wonderful beach front area along the Atlantic Ocean. The art deco district still has much to offer travelers and visitors to the Miami area. The population soon rose to half million people right after World War II and the trend did not stop. In the 1950’s immigrants began to flood into Miami from Cuba. Miami became home to Mobsters who enjoyed the proximity to the organized crime of Batista-era Havana. By 1965, 100,000 Cubans fled Cuba and arrived in Miami twice daily in what was called the “freedom flights”. Miami soon was home to a very large Cuban population. Little Havana, became a community of most of these immigrants seeking a better life. In the 1980’s, the immigrants were no longer coming from Cuba but from Haiti. But, because Haitian people were not under communist control as were the Cubans, the American government was not as quick to give citizenship to the Haitian people. As you can see, Miami is a beautiful and colorful city, with nationalities reaching every continent and art deco from every nation. Today, Miami is known as the melting pot for every country and foreign speaking person. |
