Miami Population Growth

The greater metropolitan Miami was incorporated as a city in 1896 and only had a population of around 300 people, but today Miami is home to 2,253,362. The Miami population growth continues to grow and has one of the highest foreign resident statistics in the United States.

Miami is part of what is called the “Gold Coast” with Broward and Palm Beach. This entire area is still growing by leaps and bounds and shows no signs of any decrease. The population growth has a lot to do with the employment possibilities, the beautiful summer like weather year, the beaches, and of course all the entertainment and exciting things that this area has to offer to its residence.

In 1960 the population of Miami was 935,047, in 1970 the Miami population was 1,267,792, in 1980 the population was 1,625,781, in 1990 the population was 1,937,094 and in 2000 the population was 2,253,362. The percentage of the Miami population growth from 1960 to 1970 was 35.59% from 1970 to 1980 it was 28.24%, 1980 to 1990 it was 19.15% and from 1990 to 2000 it was 16.33%. These are calculations for the entire Miami-Dade area. This trend is not apt to keep up and the percentage of population increases will start rising once again.

Many of the Miami population growth statistics state that the population is growing and many of these new residences are of foreign descent. Around 51.4% of the Miami population were foreign born and are now calling Miami home. When you look at the residence of Miami you are sure to see that Miami is becoming the “melting pot” of America with many diverse people many of which include Cubans, Nicaraguans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Puerto Ricans, Argentineans, Bahamians, Ecuadorians, Brazilians, Dominicans, Haitians, Jamaicans, and Mexicans.

Miami-Dade and their neighboring Broward County are the most populous counties in Florida and are considered the 15th largest market in the United States.
