Miami Vice and Grand Theft Auto
Miami Vice was truly iconic, so much so that a computer game was made in honor of the show. Popular PC game Grand Theft Auto came out with a newer version of their popular game called Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002. Further, GTA: Vice City is set in the mid-eighties in a world that closely resembles the neon and pastel world of Miami Vice with the backdrop of Miami condos. While the characters are not Crockett and Tubbs, it is hard to see past the façade of the game which screams Miami Vice. In the game you play an ex-con named Tommy Vercetti, which I’m sure is just a coincidence to its likeness to the name Sonny Crockett, with the same number of letters in the name. Much like GTA3, GTA: Vice City is set in a living, breathing world that you can explore as you like. During game play, you have a variety of missions to accomplish including car chases, executions, protection and intimidation, until you establish your own criminal empire. Lance Vance, who much like Tubbs is out to avenge his brother’s death from the failed deal and Ken Rosenberg, a nervous lawyer who set up the deal, and Ricardo Diaz, who is fighting for control of Vice City, all that are other characters who appear during game play. Including an all-star voice cast, the lavish style of Miami Vice is incorporated into the game, including the cars, the guns, the drugs, the luxury boats and even some motor cycles. In fact, everything that you can reminisce about the eighties appears somewhere throughout the game.
