Miami Vice: About to be Reborn to the Silver Screen

The popular and iconic television series of the eighties is about to be reborn in the 21st century. Miami Vice executive producer Michael Mann has taken the Miami Vice reins again and is morphing the television show as a feature film. The movie is now being filmed in Miami and is slated for release in July 2006.

The cast is not the original cast-Don Johnson is being replaced by Colin Farrell as detective Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas is being replaced by Jamie Foxx as detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. The movie will also feature Barry Shabaka Henley as Lieutenant Castillo, Naomie Harris as Trudy Joplin, Elizabeth Rodriguez as Gina Calabrese and Domenick Lombardozzi as Stan Switek.

Mann is producing, writing and directing the movie and notes that the movie version of Miami Vice will take place in modern times, including a revision of the story line. Miami Vice took to the top of the charts at it’s inception in 1984 with the first season of Miami Vice. Thanks to the new-wave styling of Mann, the show took off because of large budgets, luxurious cars, lavish boats, and beautiful women. Not to mention the top-of-the-charts musicians that were featured on the television show, making it an MTV-inspired video-television series.

'It goes deep into the undercover world. It’s Mann doing his heavy and tough stuff, with the kind of great dialogue you saw in 'Heat' and 'Collateral’,” explains Farrell of the new Miami Vice movie.
