Miami Vice: Ostentatious Right Down to the Watch
If you are an undercover detective like Crockett and Tubbs, you have to play the part to the fullest: the stylish clothes that match the décor of the city, the luxurious and expensive cars, the fast boats and an expensive watch. You can’t go around wearing a Timex watch if you are driving a Ferrari Testarossa and living on a 42 foot sailboat. Yes, the watch that Crockett wore was a Rolex. A Rolex Day-Date in 18 Carat Gold, with presidential bracelet and the champagne gold colored dial, to be exact. It featured a concealed clasp that Crockett finds out in one episode opens rather easily in an altercation. It also features a Cyclops lens that magnifies the date so that it is easier to read. This model also displays what day it is along with the date. This model of Rolex was highly popular in the eighties, and was heavily featured in Miami Vice. In 1984, the watch cost approximately $16,000. Since then, the style has been updated, with a white dial as a standard. Another watch featured in Miami Vice was the Ebel Sports Classique. Made of stainless steel and 40 micron gold plated parts, it featured quartz movement and a modern sports styling typical of the eighties. Recently, this watch has been overtaken in the mid-range sports watch market by watches made by companies like Tag Heuer. Again, the Ebel Sports Classique has been replaced recently by the more striking and esthetic Ebel Wave model watches.
